That Feeling. The one you get when you swipe your credit card, or take a test drive of a new car. The one that overcomes me personally when I walk into Target to buy 2 things and come out with 18. It’s an exhilaration that turns into realization that turns into questioning and regret, which just leads to trying to find more of that feeling to make ourselves feel better.

Money Shame – A 3 Part Series Hosted by Tammy Lally is based on a TED Talk that Tammy Lally gave on June 24th at the Dr. Phillips Center, focusing on defining, identifying, and changing our ideas on Money Shame.  For the next few weeks, I will blog/summarize her inspirational words, however, it should be noted that hearing Tammy

present this in person is a life changing experience. If you, someone you know, or a group, would like to have Tammy Lally, the Money Coach, speak and enlighten, please contact her!

Part 2: Follow Your Dollars

Does Money Shame sound familiar? You are not alone, WE ALL HAVE MONEY SHAME. The difference is that you have acknowledged it. Congratulations, you just took the first step towards financial freedom.

Next step. Follow your dollars – your money shows you right away what you value. How many times did you go shopping last month? Eat out? Splurge on some form of entertainment? Did you pay your bills? Did you have to borrow money? Who do you still owe money to? What do you still need to pay off?

It would be easy for me to say, “OK. Change it. No more Starbucks. No more vacations. All your problems will be fixed.” But you and I both know that probably wont work. I know that whenever I remember how much debt I’m in – I’m encouraged to go spend more on my forms of numbing out – shopping sprees and restaurant dinners

If you are ready to change – talk about your financial fears and behaviors, with a compassionate, non-judgmental friend. Let them keep you accountable and help track every dollar of your spending.

And if you really want to wake up, get curious about your feelings when you are spending – are you feeling excited, lonely, bored or disconnected?

There’s a lot of commitment that is needed for these steps. You have it in yourself, and I believe in you! Be the change of this endless money shame cycle that we all have found ourselves in!

I know from my own experience that you can’t do this alone. Need help finding someone to talk to about your financial behaviors? Tammy Lally, the Money Coach is a great person to start with! Also, check out The Money Detox Circle – a group of women that meet the 2nd Saturday of every month, to discuss anything money-related. For more information, click here:
